Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Your First Travel eSIM

Buying your first travel eSIM is not difficult. The real challenge is determining which of the available plans best suits your trip.

Price and data allowance may seem like the main criteria at first, but there are other important details to consider: device compatibility, destination coverage, plan validity, activation terms, and the services included.

Checking the following points in advance can help you avoid many questions and potential issues later.

1. Does Your Phone Support eSIM?

The first step is to check your device’s compatibility. If your phone does not support eSIM technology, you will not be able to install the plan you purchase.

You can check this by looking for Add eSIM or a similar option in your device’s mobile network settings. Another method is to look for an EID number in your device information.

Different regional versions of the same phone model may have different features. For this reason, it is more reliable to check the exact model number rather than relying solely on the device name.

2. Is Your Device Carrier-Unlocked?

Even if your phone supports eSIM technology, it may not work with a plan from another provider if it is locked to a mobile carrier.

On an iPhone, you can check this information under:

Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock

If it says No SIM Restrictions, your device is carrier-unlocked.

The process may vary depending on the Android model. If this information does not appear in your settings, contact the retailer or mobile operator from which you purchased the phone.

3. Does the Plan Cover Your Entire Itinerary?

If you are visiting only one country, a plan designed specifically for that destination may be sufficient. For a trip involving several countries, a regional plan may be a more practical option.

For example, do not assume that a plan labeled “Europe” automatically covers every country in the region. Check the coverage list and make sure that every destination on your itinerary is included.

4. How Much Data Do You Need?

The amount of data you need depends on the length of your trip and how you use your phone.

Choosing slightly more data than you expect to use can provide some flexibility. However, there is no need to pay extra for a large plan if you are unlikely to use the full allowance.

5. When Does the Validity Period Begin?

This is one of the details first-time eSIM users most commonly overlook.

The plan’s validity period may begin:

  • When the purchase is completed
  • When the eSIM is installed on the device
  • When it first connects to a supported network at your destination

An eSIM that activates upon its first network connection can usually be installed before departure. However, if the plan activates immediately after installation, adding it too early may cause you to lose part of its validity period.

This is why it is important to review the activation terms before completing your purchase.

6. Does the Plan Include Calls and SMS?

Most travel eSIMs provide mobile data only. In this case, you can still make calls and send messages over the internet using WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime, and similar apps.

7. Is Hotspot Usage Allowed?

If you plan to share your connection with a laptop, tablet, or another phone, make sure your chosen plan supports hotspot usage.

Some plans allow unrestricted internet sharing, while others limit it or do not support it at all. Keep in mind that using a hotspot can also consume your data allowance more quickly.

8. Can You Top Up the Plan When Your Data Runs Out?

It is not always possible to predict your exact data needs. For this reason, it is useful to know whether your plan can be topped up later.

Some eSIM plans can be topped up directly through the provider’s app, while others require you to purchase a new plan.

9. Which Network and Speed Are Available?

An eSIM provider delivers internet access through partner mobile operators in the country you are visiting. As a result, network quality may vary depending on your location and local coverage.

Even plans advertised as “unlimited” may reduce your connection speed after you use a certain amount of data. Always review the usage terms rather than relying on the plan name alone.

10. What Is Included in the Total Price?

When comparing plans, look beyond the data allowance and consider the final amount you will pay.

Additional costs such as taxes, service fees, and currency conversion charges may change the price initially displayed. Purchases made through Wayro are not subject to VAT, allowing you to avoid the standard 18% VAT charge on each purchase. (Applies to local purchases only.)

For a more accurate comparison, consider the price alongside the data allowance, validity period, and destination coverage.

11. Is Customer Support Available?

Fast and accessible support is particularly important if you experience connection issues while traveling.

Before purchasing a plan, check which support channels the provider offers and how you can request assistance. It is also helpful to keep your installation details, order number, and plan information easily accessible throughout your trip.

If a problem occurs, do not delete your eSIM profile immediately. Some QR codes are designed for one-time use, meaning you may not be able to reinstall the eSIM with the same code after deleting the profile.

If you are using an eSIM for the first time, Wayro can help make your first experience simple and convenient.
