10 Common eSIM Problems and How to Fix Them

Have you installed a travel eSIM but cannot connect to the internet? Don’t worry. The issue usually comes from your device’s network settings or the plan’s activation requirements rather than the eSIM itself.

Below, you’ll find 10 of the most common problems eSIM users experience and practical ways to resolve them.

1. The eSIM Won’t Install

If the installation does not begin, the cause may be device incompatibility, a carrier lock, or an unstable internet connection.

What can you do?

  • Check whether your phone supports eSIM technology.
  • Make sure your device is carrier-unlocked.
  • Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network.
  • Update your device’s operating system.
  • Restart your phone and try the installation again.

Some devices can store only a limited number of eSIM profiles. If you have reached the limit, you may need to remove a profile you no longer use.

2. The QR Code Is Not Recognized

If your camera cannot scan the QR code, the image may be unclear, incomplete, or previously used. Many eSIM QR codes are designed for one-time installation only.

What can you do?

  • Make sure the QR code is fully visible and clear.
  • Increase the screen brightness and clean your camera lens.
  • Check your internet connection.
  • Enter the installation details manually if they have been provided.
  • If the code has already been used, contact your provider’s support team.

3. The Activation Does Not Complete

If your eSIM remains stuck on Activating for a long time after installation, it does not necessarily indicate a problem. Some travel eSIMs activate only after connecting to a partner network at a destination covered by the plan.

What can you do?

If you have not yet arrived at your destination, wait for the activation to complete once you get there. If you have already arrived:

  • Turn Airplane Mode on and then off again.
  • Disable and reactivate the eSIM line.
  • Restart your device.
  • Set network selection to automatic.

You should also check in advance when your plan’s validity period begins—upon purchase, installation, or the first connection to a supported network.

4. Your Phone Cannot Find a Network

If No Service or Searching appears on the screen, your device may not be connected to a supported local network.

What can you do?

  • Make sure your plan covers the country you are currently in.
  • Set network selection to Automatic.
  • If automatic selection does not work, manually choose one of the operators supported by your plan.
  • Move to an area with a stronger signal.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on briefly and then switch it off.

Connecting to a network may take longer in certain locations, particularly at airports, on underground transport, or inside buildings.

5. The Network Appears, but the Internet Does Not Work

Your phone may be connected to a local operator’s network while another SIM is still selected as the preferred line for mobile data.

What can you do?

  • Check that the eSIM line is active.
  • Select the eSIM as your preferred line for mobile data.
  • Turn mobile data off and then back on.
  • Disable the data-switching feature that allows your device to switch automatically to another SIM.
  • Make sure data roaming is disabled for your primary SIM.

These checks can also help prevent unexpected roaming charges.

6. Data Roaming Is Not Enabled

Travel eSIMs often provide internet access through local partner networks. For this reason, Data Roaming may need to be enabled for your eSIM line.

What can you do?

Open your phone’s mobile network settings, select your travel eSIM, and enable Data Roaming.

Make sure you enable this feature for your travel eSIM—not for your primary SIM card.

7. The APN Settings Are Incorrect

The APN determines how your device connects to a mobile data network. This information is added automatically for most eSIMs, but some plans may require you to enter it manually.

What can you do?

  • Check the APN details provided by your eSIM provider.
  • Enter the APN exactly as provided without making any changes.
  • Leave the username and password fields blank unless instructed otherwise.
  • Save the changes and reactivate the eSIM line.

Do not try to guess the APN details. Incorrect information may prevent your device from connecting to the internet altogether.

8. The Internet Speed Is Slow

A slow connection does not always mean there is a problem with your eSIM. Speed may vary depending on local network coverage, network congestion, your location, and the terms of your plan.

What can you do?

  • Move to an area with a stronger signal.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on and then off again.
  • Try another network supported by your plan.
  • Pause background downloads and updates.
  • Check whether you have used up your data allowance.

If the speed drops only at certain times of day, local network congestion may be the cause.

9. Your Data Allowance Runs Out Quickly

Streaming videos, using social media, syncing files to the cloud, and sharing your internet connection can significantly increase data usage.

What can you do?

  • Enable Low Data Mode or Data Saver.
  • Limit background data usage for apps.
  • Disable automatic cloud uploads for photos and videos.
  • Download system and app updates only when connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Reduce video streaming quality.
  • Turn off the hotspot when you are not using it.

If you have used up your data allowance, you may need to purchase a new plan or top up your current one when this option is available.

10. The Hotspot Feature Does Not Work

Even if mobile data works on your phone, you may not be able to share the connection with other devices. This may be caused by your device settings or hotspot restrictions under your plan.

What can you do?

  • Check whether your plan supports internet sharing.
  • Make sure the eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  • Turn the hotspot feature off and then back on.
  • Check your APN settings.
  • Restart both your phone and the device you want to connect.

If all your settings are correct but the feature still does not work, hotspot usage may be restricted under your chosen plan.

Important: Do Not Delete Your eSIM Profile Immediately

When a connection problem occurs, deleting and reinstalling the eSIM may seem like the quickest solution. However, some eSIM profiles and QR codes are designed for one-time use only. Once the profile is deleted, you may not be able to reinstall it using the same details.

First, check the following:

  • Is the eSIM line active?
  • Is the correct line selected for mobile data?
  • Is Data Roaming enabled?
  • Are the APN details correct?
  • Is the plan still valid, and do you have data remaining?

If the problem continues, contact the support team before deleting your eSIM.
